Born in Maine in 1915, Francis W. Bilodeau received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College in 1938. He attended graduate school at Columbia University in 1939, and Yale University from 1940 to1941. Bilodeau earned his PhD in philosophy from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University in 1942. He enlisted in the army in October of 1941, and from 1941 until 1946, was reported to have served as director of a collecting point in Germany.[1]

Upon his return to the U.S., Bilodeau worked as both a curator and art teacher at several art galleries and institutions. He published numerous art publications and catalogues, and became a specialist in art of the Carolinas. Bilodeau passed away in New York in 2004.
